This is for the mug pictured. It is one of a kind. Each mug is hand thrown on the potters wheel, trimmed, refined and then the handle is attached. After that it is decorated, then it dries for a week to 10 days before going into the kiln for the first time. They are fired in the kiln twice and then hand-painted, waxed and glazed.
Mishima technique is what I used to decorate this mug: When the mug body is leather hard (firm yet still soft enough to carve) I draw the outline of the design using a sharp pin tool. Then I filled the lines with black underglaze, allowed it to dry, scraped off the excess glaze with a metal rib, and cleaned it up with a clean sponge. The mugs dried and were buisqued fired (first firing). Then I painted the design with colorful glazes that have a watercolor effect when you layer them. After that I carefully painted wax resist on the design and dipped the mug in a bucket of glaze. The wax keeps other glazes from getting on the design. Finally they were fired a second time to 2200°F. It is a very time consuming process but I thoroughly enjoy it and I just love the results. Each is one of a kind and will not be repeated.
As with all handmade pottery...every piece has its own unique handmade character and may have slightly different sizes, shapes and color variations. I never use molds and make each, one at a time. I always use lead free glaze & high fire in my kiln. All my dishes are food, dishwasher and microwave safe but hand washing is always recommended. Each piece is signed Back Bay Pottery and my initials.
